Welcome to February, and a new challenge at More Than Words!
We are pleased to share the first release of our Design Team's
interpretation of the challenge.
We are pleased to share the first release of our Design Team's
interpretation of the challenge.
Our Main Challenge is based on a word inspiration and a creative challenge.
Word Inspiration - THE PAST
Creative Challenge - RUST
What does THE PAST make you think of? Do you have childhood memories to share? Perhaps you love everything vintage and want to create in that style. We'd love you to share your stories or creations about something old! We need to see in your project how our word inspired you. If it isn't obvious in your work, then please explain it in your post. To add to the effect, we want to see some RUST on your project. It can be a rusty piece of metal, something you've added a rust effect to, or even a photo of something old and rusty. Get your rust on!

Now let's see what our fabulous DT has come up with,
inspired by THE PAST & RUST Main Challenge!
LANUSIA: THE PAST: Our planet has lots of lost and forgotten places. Some of them used to be inhabited by people and other living creatures. Looking at photos of such places always makes me feel upset. The tap in the photo gave water to everybody who needed it. It saved lives, listened to people's stories, felt happy and useful. One day all the people left for some reason and the tap became RUSTY soon. Now the tap is hidden in the grass and bushes, only birds and insects rarely come to it mostsly because of curiosity.
ELLE: I couldn't get the RUSTY truck image out of my head as I was thinking about this project, so I decided to recreate that effect on this truck/vehicle piece of chipboard that I had in my stash. As I was working on it, I kept thinking about the vehicle's past history and what it might have looked like when it was new. I found this small photo and decided to link them together to show THE PAST and the present. It could be interpreted in a couple of different ways... so I leave it up to you!
DAISY: For this challenge, I looked through photos of my family tree to find this wedding photo of my paternal grandparents. At the same time, I immersed myself in THE PAST by re-reading the arrival of my ancestors in Canada. For the creative twist, I used the RUST effect paste from Finnabair.
KATRIN: With 2020, a new year has started, and many things have changed. I have created this mixed media layout focusing on a RUSTY mystical key that closes with THE PAST. I also used the colors of time... copper and ancient gold. The background was created with fluorescent watercolors with a golden undertone.
PRIYA: THE PAST is the treasure of our memories. We can never get back what is gone, but they live in our memories forever. We should learn from our past and live everyday applying those lessons. The clock on my project, is showing the time flying away and each moment turning into a past memory. For the RUST and grungy effect, I used Finnabair mould and rust pastes.
ANNA: The fact that our "The Past & Rust" challenge happened in February is probably not a coincidence. This is a special month for me - the anniversary of my father's death. Many years have gone by but I still feel very connected to him. I thought this is a great opportunity to make a mixed media piece of art using his childhood photo. I love making a RUST effect, and it worked great for a piece about THE PAST. I have a lot of childhood memories of old cars, playing in the garage, and sorting my dad's screws and nails. My techique for the rust effect was to use Rusty paper paste by Viva, and add more depth by using diluted fluid acrylics (Paynes Grey, Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide, Quinacridone Gold) on top of it.
ROSALIE: This is a picture of my mother's family home on Yorke Peninsula - South Australia - Zacher Homestead. It was built in 1904 and represents my PAST as her family was the first generation who would be born in Australia. To creat the RUST colours, I used rust effect pastes and embellishments to develop my layout.
HEMA: "Inhale the Future, Exhale THE PAST"... We all have a past and we learn from those past experiences and situations. It's a lovely lesson and we turn out more wise and beautiful by that. Your past will give you the strength and wisdom that you have today. So celebrate it! Don't let it haunt you. I have used the RUST look in my work and wanted to draw out the creative side of the past. The elements speak of the broken side of our past. The focal image of the woman has been layered to say that she can emerge strong and beautiful, leaving her past behind.
Our design team has shared their feelings about THE PAST with you
using old RUST colours. We hope that they will have inspired you to play along!
